Emotional Armour is a collection of wearable stained glass inspired by a persistent desire to both protect from the overstimulation of the surrounding world and present my hidden inner self to it.
Creating Emotional Armour was a form of protection for me. A secure outlet to express the more challenging feelings I possess as a woman, a highly sensitive person, and someone learning to live alongside clinical depression and anxiety .
Through the delicate but permanent medium of stained glass this series aims to confront and defend against some of my more challenging emotions. Such as fear of the unknown, learning to manage physical pain from trauma, and the weight of responsibility and frustration with the state of our climate.
Aesthetically this series sources inspiration from medieval armour, ceremonial ritual wear, Italian Carnevale, and the medicinal healing power of the natural world.
Emotional Armour has been exhibited in Iceland at The Hafnarborg Arts and Cultural Centre, in New York City at Essex Flowers, and in Toronto at Likely General. Emotional Armour is possible from funding from Toronto Arts Council.
